URBAN SPACES No5
Featuring Green Design Strategies
Architects Landscape Architects
Urban Designers Planners
34 Firms OverI 6o Projects
dited by: John Morris Dixon, FAIA
Like the four previous editions of Urban Spaces, this one
concentrates on design for the community, ranging from
individual buildings and open spaces through neighbor-
hoods to entire towns. New in this edition is a focus on
sustainability - on the qualities conveniently identified
by the adjective "green."
It is now widely recognized that our societies are threat-
ened if we squander our resources, pollute our air, and
alter our climates. Sustainability is increasingly incorpo-
rated into the policies of corporations, institutions, and
governments at all levels. Many projects in this book
are designed to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design) standards established by the U.S.
Green Buildings Council. The book's introductory essay
on green building explores the issues involved in sustain-
ability, our efforts in the area to date, and the environ-
mental virtues of many projects featured in this edition.
In these generously illustrated pages, you will review
over 160 projects throughout the world, gaining invalu-
able insights into the planning and design of such for-
ward-lonking developments as the conversion of a prison
in Virginia into an arts center, a new beachfront com-
munity within the New York City limits, "green" offices
in Santa Monica for a non-profit organization,.extensive
new mixed-use developments in Atlanta and Dallas, and
plans for the waterfront of Shenzhen, China.
As in all previous Urban Spaces books, architectural
journalist John Morris Dixon explains the challenges and
accomplishments of the outstanding projects showcased
in the new edition. Once again, the Urban Land Institute
has cooperated with Visual Reference Publications in the
publishing of this book.
Urban Spaces No. 5 is an invaluable reference for
developers, public officials, building committees, and
professionals responsible for the planning, design, and
construction of urban developments of all kinds.
